LEAVING
CLASS
The leaving class has a defined program to follow. Copies
are available on file.
If there is a student who the class teacher and subject
teachers feel should be at the Centre longer, the student
should be transferred to another class before entering the
leaving stage.
CHOICE OF HIGH SCHOOLS
With a few exceptions e.g. senior college placement for
older students, the local comprehensive high school will
meet a student’s needs. Curriculum is largely similar,
although special electives and options may be only available
in some schools. Socially a local network of friends is
more likely to develop. A local school also means less time
wasted in travel.
Should a specific school need to be recommended this should
arise in placement discussions between the class teacher
and counsellor prior to parent interviews.
Local v Non local Placement
There is a defined local area for each school. Maps are
available at the Centre.
Non local placement cannot be guaranteed.
Government policy is that students have a right to attend
their local government high school. High schools are required
to keep a “buffer” of places for local students
who may enrol during the course of a year. Despite this
some schools find their buffer fills rapidly because of
rental accommodation factors in their local area.
Some schools may be unable to accommodate even local students,
especially later in the school year.
Parents have the right to request an out-of-area placement.
However, this request can be denied on the grounds that
there may be no vacancies for non-local students. Addresses
are strictly monitored to avoid false claims for placement.
In an effort to advise schools of numbers of prospective
enrolments each term the IEC surveys parents as to their
preferred H.S. Advice is given to the schools and waiting
lists established.
